August 29, 2010: Rock the Blue Ridge Ride

Honoring the 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ride Parkway, Rock the Blue Ridge is an organized cycling event tracing the spectacular ridges of the NC High Country.
The 75 Mile Ride Loop: West on the BRParkway from the Flattop Road entrance to the Linvillle Falls. Follow a loop through the heart of Avery County and come back to the finish via 221. 75 Mile Ride offers 4,700 ft in elevation gain.
The 35 Mile Ride Loop: West on the BRP from the Flattop Road entrance to the base of Grandfather. Follow 221 East back to the finish. 35 Mile Ride offers 2,450 ft in elevation gain.
Event Itinerary Includes: (additions to this schedule are expected as other sponsors are confirmed)
Saturday: Kids Bike Rodeo, Check-in, Art Crawl of Watauga and Avery County (centering on Crossnore School's gallery, frescoes, and weaving room).
Sunday: The organized bike rides, After-ride heritage themed party with BBQ, bluegrass, and other NC High Country entertainment, Event Expo (open to the public).

The artists and craftsmen of Blowing Rock's Artists Alley open their doors to the public with exhibits featuring ceramics, acrylics, oils, watercolor, metals, jewelry, glass, applique and sculpture. Reception Friday evening from 4 PM to 7 PM open to the public. Saturday hours: 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from noon to 4 PM.
Hwy 221 south, 4 miles from downtown Blowing Rock, turn right on Artists Alley.

Come sample a Mash Bash of craft & club beers! The High Country Beer Fest is the annual celebration of great craft beer from around the region and the world. Come sample craft beers, club beers, and delicious food in the beautiful high country of North Carolina. Educational seminars will cover all aspects of beer, brewing, and pairing food and beer.

A non-profit organization started by Joe Shannon in 1994 with the purpose of celebrating Appalachian culture through music.

Each year on the Sunday night that precedes Labor Day, MHM presents a special concert dedicated to the workers who have built (and are building) our community and our region. This year's celebration will be led by The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys, Paige Greene and Si Kahn. There is always an abundance of songs about mill workers, railroaders, truck drivers, and homemakers. Usually, too, there's a song or two about coal mining; this year MHM will offer a special tribute to miners. Admission.

You are invited to join the art galleries, restaurants, and businesses on Sunset Drive for food, drinks, friendship and summer fun! Participating merchants are Dewoolfson Linens, Art and Artifacts, Christopher's Wine and Cheese, Feather Your Nest, Jake's at the Rock, and Morning Star Gallery.
The Sunset Drive restaurants will be open during the Spring Stroll. They include Mellow Mushroom Pizza, The Best Cellar at the Inn at Ragged Gardens, Crippen's, and Blowing Rock Grille. Bars will open at 5:30 PM, and, weather permitting, visitors will enjoy outdoor seating. The spring garden at The Best Cellar is a beautiful place to enjoy this time of year, and the front porch at Crippen's is a great place to begin your Stroll. Art and Artifacts is featuring the abstract expressionist works of Irmaly Bracken as well as new works by gallery owner, Judi Russell. Judy Rider and Frances Bost of Hickory, NC will be exhibiting recent works this evening, too. Morning Star Gallery invites you to enjoy artist, Trena McNabb�s botanicals and paintings of Mother Earth in honor of Earth Day. Also featured are Brad Stroman's paintings of earth's little treasures. In keeping with the gallery's theme of Made in the USA, the gallery will be sharing American made wine.
Look for the balloons on Sunset Drive identifying participating businesses. Come, eat, drink, and enjoy the evening air on Sunset Drive!

The 2nd Annual Fall Ball fundraiser will be beautifully decorated for the season, and will feature fine dining, a silent auction, the Silvio Martinat Swing Band and dancing. 100% of the proceeds raised at the event will go to High Country Hospice patient care. High Country Hospice is the only non-profit hospice serving the needs of terminally ill patients and their families in Watauga County.

Grab your beer stein, put on your lederhosen and head to Sugar Mountain Resort for the 20th annual Oktoberfest celebration! Over 40 artisan's and craftspeople open their stands at 10:00am each day. A sampling of this year's vendors include: chair canning, wooden toys, oil paintings, stain glass, handmade furniture, dolls, copper art, ceramics, honey, beeswax candles, bird houses, and much more. Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the mile and a half long chairlift ride to Sugar's 5,300 ft peak. Everyone, even mountain bikers are welcome to ride the lift. The children's activity center, located in the Ski School Play Yard will keep the young ones entertained each day from noon until 4:00pm. A $7 fee per child/per day includes hay rides, a chance to meet Sugar Bear and Sweetie Bear and several Airwalk stations. Cotton candy, popcorn, caramel apples, homemade cookies and drinks are also available in the children's activity center. All ages are welcome to participate. An Oktoberfest isn't complete without the sounds of an Oom Pah Band. From noon until 4:00pm both Saturday & Sunday the Harbour Towne Fest Band, guarantees to bring the sounds, dances and enthusiasm of Bavaria to Sugar Mountain. The 15 piece band will enthusiastically play the sounds of Germany's Bavaria! Bavarian cuisine, including Bratwurst, Knackwurst, German Potato Salad, Sauerkraut and pretzels will be available starting at 11:00am both Saturday & Sunday. To help wash it down, an ample supply of authentic Bavarian beverages will be flowing all weekend long. If Bavarian cuisine's not your preference; hot dogs, hamburgers, soda, cotton candy, kettle corn, caramel apples, and other festive foods will be on hand. Rain or shine, the festival will go on!

Race a woolly worm in this annual festival that also includes entertainment, food, crafts and more! Since 1978, the residents of Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain villages have celebrated the coming of the snow season with the Woolly Worm Festival. The third weekend in October determies which worm will have the honor of predicting the severity of the coming winter.
